In January 2017, the City of Los Angeles and 30 other U.S. cities issued an Electric Vehicle Request for Information (RFI), which helped aggregate and better understand municipal demand for EVs. Feedback and suggestions received through that process led to the development of the Climate Mayors EV Purchasing Collaborative (the Collaborative), which was officially launched in September 2018. At the time, 22 cities and counties committed to purchasing over 350 EVs. Now, the Collaborative includes over 250 cities, counties, transit agencies, port authorities, and colleges and universities committed to purchasing over 4000 EVs.
The Collaborative is an unprecedented cooperation of Climate Mayors cities across the country to leverage their collective buying power and accelerate the conversion of municipal fleets to electric—sending a powerful signal to the global car market and helping America maintain its commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement. The Collaborative also provides training, best practices, educational resources and analysis support, creating a one-stop shop to support EV transitions for public fleets.
