Household Affordability and Climate

Americans are increasingly focused on economic concerns that address household affordability such as inflation, job security, and rising costs. Investing in climate action can directly address these pressing challenges from lowering utility expenses, to creating good jobs, and strengthening local economies. Low-income families (particularly families of color) disproportionately experience energy burdens caused by extreme weather, old building stock and lack of investment — 38 percent of households in the United States have a high or severe energy burden. This means that almost a quarter of low-income households in the U.S. spend more than 15% of their income on energy bills.

Climate Mayors has worked with mayors and developed resources to support mayors in using climate action as a tool for addressing household affordability and materials to help uplift the solutions that are working
